Maverine's Reaction: Two Statler Brothers Specials
Marla's best friend Maverine talks about the two Statler Brothers special. First in 1981 just before Lew DeWitt decided to leave because of Crohn's disease, their first special was aired. Their six special guests were Roy Rogers, Conway Twitty, Brenda Lee, Barbara Mandrell, Janie Fricke and Chet Atkins.
First the Statlers went to the old elementary school, turns into an office. The office is closed after they retired and turned into a Christian school. Roy did a little singing going on. After they sang "The Movies" written by Lew, their movie "Tennessee Beat" features "Flowers on the Wall." Conway sings "Fifteen Years Ago" from 1970. Brenda sings this wonderful tune, but the sign said "Class of '57" is the name of the song in which Harold Reid graduates. Barbara was serious about their pictures, and she was at the football field singing "Moments to Remember." Janie was at the drive in food place. Chet picks and sing the bits of "I Walk the Line." Chet asked the Statlers to sing the quiz song. The Statlers were at the old gym talking about 1955 (same year as Jimmy Fortune was born), singing their first gospel song, won the contest and add the local paper the next day. They sang the last two songs, "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine" and "Thank You World."
Next in 1983 with Jimmy on the line, their other six guests were Roy Clark, Masters Five, Charly McClain, Reba McEntire, Oak Ridge Boys and Mel Tillis.
They found the cabin, strumming to the song "Child of the '50s." The Oaks sang two songs, Reba sang the Willie Nelson song. Mel didn't have time to make a comedy joke before the second song started. The Statlers had their music video "Elizabeth" written by Jimmy. Roy Clark and his band played two songs, some of the band members were Rodney Lay and Jimmy Henley. Charly sang "Fly into Love," while Barbara is the surprise guest. The Masters Five sang three songs, the last is with the Statlers. That night, the Statlers sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." The drama special is about the western short with Mel and Reba. The Statlers had three songs before bus driver Dale asked them that they went to the wrong house, and left Harold alone.
